The Group and Sort By function in Primavera P6 can be a powerful tool if you know how to layer grouping levels. You can print a layout with specific groupings as a report for your team or your managers. In this article, we will show you how to group by activity start dates within each WBS level.
1) OPEN THE GROUP AND SORT BY DIALOG BOX.
In the Activities window, click on the Group and Sort by icon on the toolbox > Customize (shown below).
Alternatively, you can:
- Click on the View menu > Group and Sort by > Customize.
- Click on the Layout menu > Group and Sort …
- Right-click on the Activity Table > Group and Sort …
2) GROUP BY WBS.
In the Group and Sort By dialog box, change the first level of the Group By section to WBS. This is already done in our example. You’ll notice that you cannot add any additional Group By levels yet.
Next, unmark the checkbox under the Indent column. Once you unmark the checkbox, you’ll be able to add more levels.
3) ADD THE SECOND LEVEL OF GROUPING – START.
Click on the second level of the Group By section. Scroll down to select Start.
4) SELECT THE START DATE INTERVAL.
When you are using the Start Date to group activities, you will be able to identify the time interval you would like to group the activities. You can group the activities by Day, Month, Quarter, Week, and Year.
Example: By Day. You can see the new heading on the Activity Table indicating the Start Date as single days of the calendar in sequential order.
Example: By Week. Now the Activity Table is grouping the activities by weeks.
Example: By Month. Finally, the Activity Table is indicating the activities are being grouped by Month.
